Portugal has quietly become the destination people ask about most after France. The reasons are consistent: a cost of living that still compares well, a coast that is not as built up as parts of Spain, and a settled expatriate community that makes arriving less of a leap.

What makes the move distinctive is the distance and the consular step. Neither is difficult. Both need starting earlier than people expect.

The route

The first legs are familiar: out of Erith on the A2 or the M25, the M20 across Kent, the crossing, then France. Vehicles bound for Portugal almost always take the Atlantic side — Bordeaux, the border at Irún, and across northern Spain.

From there it depends on the destination. For Porto and the north, the A-52 to Vigo and down. For Lisbon and the Silver Coast, through Salamanca and across at Vilar Formoso. For the Algarve, south through Mérida and Seville and over the Guadiana at Ayamonte. All long, all run under driving-hours rules, and the schedule we give you reflects that rather than a best case.

Access at the far end

Two patterns. Coastal apartments, where the questions are the lift and the parking — much as anywhere. And rural properties, where the last kilometre is a track, the gate is narrower than the wall suggests, and the turning circle decides everything.

We ask for photographs of the approach and, where the property is remote, coordinates rather than a postal address. Portuguese rural addressing is not always precise enough for a driver who has never been there.

Customs and the certificado de bagagem

This is the part that needs planning. Relief on household goods entering Portugal depends on establishing residence, and the standard route involves obtaining a certificate of baggage — the certificado de bagagem — applied for through the Portuguese consular service before the goods travel, supported by your NIF and evidence of the Portuguese address.

Alongside it you need a detailed valued inventory, which we build at survey. What we cannot do is obtain your NIF or your residence documents for you, so those are the things to start first — and we say so on day one rather than a fortnight before loading.

Vehicle options on a route this long

Your own vehicle gives you your dates and the fewest handlings, which counts over this distance. Shared space costs less and asks for flexibility instead. Because the run is long, the gap between the two is wider here than on the France route — worth a conversation rather than an assumption.

Why people go

Cost, climate and pace, roughly in that order, plus a residency framework that has been comparatively welcoming. The Algarve gets the attention, but a good share of the moves we handle go inland or to the Silver Coast, where the money buys land and the winters are quieter.
