Flat and apartment removals in Erith
More of Erith lives in flats than in houses, and flat moves fail or succeed on details that never appear in a room count: the lift door width, the turn at the bottom of the stairwell, and whether there is anywhere legal to stand a van.
We do a lot of flat moves. Purpose-built low-rise on the estates, taller blocks around the town, converted Victorian houses split into two or three, and the newer riverside apartments. They behave differently enough that treating them as one category is how people end up standing on a pavement at four in the afternoon.
The three things that decide a flat move
The lift
Not its floor area — its door. A lift car that looks generous is useless if the doorway will not take a wardrobe on its side. Measure the door opening, height and width, and send it with your enquiry. If there is a goods lift, say so; it is almost always the better option.
The stairwell
Specifically the turn at each landing. Older blocks and converted houses often have a tight half-landing that will not pass a three-seat sofa however you angle it. Where that is the case we either take the sofa apart or plan a different route, and we would rather know at survey.
The parking
Distance from the communal door to the nearest legal standing point is the single biggest variable in a flat move. Twenty metres is nothing. Eighty metres, twice, for every item, is a different job entirely.
The kinds of flat around here
Riverside and newer apartments
The easiest addresses in DA8 — loading bays, goods lifts and wide corridors. Most have a lift booking system; tell us the building's rules and any time window it imposes.
Purpose-built blocks and low-rise estate flats
The bulk of it. Mixed lift quality, communal doors that need propping, and sometimes a long walk from the bay. Straightforward with the right crew size.
Converted houses
Two or three flats in an old terrace. No lift, original staircases, and a shared front door that other residents also need. Early starts and more hands.
Walk-ups
Everything on foot. We send more people, not fewer, and we take the heavy things first while everyone is fresh.
What we do differently on flats
- Measure the lift before the day rather than at the door
- Plan a stair route as a fallback even when the lift works
- Protect communal hallways and lift interiors — those are somebody else's property
- Take the sofa apart if the half-landing says so, and rebuild it upstairs
- Send crew numbers matched to the carry, not the volume
Getting a quote
Send the two addresses, the floor at each end, whether there is a lift, and a rough list of what is going. Photos of the communal entrance and the stairwell turn are worth more than a paragraph of description. Bigger loads sit under house removals; a single room is man and van.

Flat move questions
Why do you ask about the lift so much?
Because it decides the day. A lift with a wide door takes a wardrobe standing up and the move is quick. A lift with a narrow door does not, and then everything above the second floor goes up the stairs with more hands. Five minutes of measuring changes the whole plan.
What if the lift is out of service?
It happens, usually on the day. If we have already planned the stair route as a fallback it costs time rather than derailing the move. That is why we plan it even when the lift is working.
Do you deal with the concierge or building manager?
Where there is one, yes, but the booking usually has to come from you as the resident — most buildings will only take a lift reservation from the leaseholder or tenant. Tell us the building rules and we will work to them.
Can you move a flat with no lift at all?
Yes. Walk-ups are routine in Erith. We send more people rather than fewer, because two crew on a fourth-floor walk-up is how furniture gets damaged and backs get hurt.
Is a flat move cheaper than a house move?
Usually less volume, sometimes more labour. A ground-floor flat with a bay outside is one of the cheapest moves there is; a top-floor walk-up with restricted parking is not. It is the access, not the property type.
Next step
Moving flat in Erith?
Send the floor at each end, whether there is a lift, and a photo of the communal entrance. That is most of what we need.
